Greetings all! Stan suggested Woodson State Lake for the spring fieldtrip April 29-30. I contacted the park manager and they have plenty of space in their primitive campground. Cross Timbers area is about 5 mi. away and sounds like a very diverse area with potential for hiking. Does anyone have ideas for program content or potential facilitators?

I agree with most of what has already been said by Brad and Harry, so some of my comments will be repetitive but at least in that case others may know what things are appreciated by all…

    - I have enjoyed every field trip that I have participated in and in those cases where I couldn’t participate I knew that I was missing something valuable.

I will say that, personally, the thing I valued most about KABT field trips was a chance to learn from others who knew more than me. Though I was interested in the specifics of each field trip as shared by trip leaders, I second Brad’s comments about time to get off in small groups. I know I learned as much wildflower identification, natural…[Read more]

Some random observations about “successful” field trips from my perspective.

Camping is good. It seems that camping out in the area of the field trip really helps to make connections–with each other and the local enviornment. The first thoughts that come to mind are sitting around the campfires as we wait for the different…[Read more]

As I was driving home on Saturday from the board meeting, my mind got to rambling. One of the rambles focused on KABT field trips. It occurred to me that all of us have different ideas of what we consider to be successful trips or trips that we would want to attend. I thought over the years to the field trips I’ve been on and organized and…[Read more]

  • Kim Foglia
We lost a great biology educator, Kim Foglia on Jan. 4th, 2011 after a long, dignified and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.  Back in 2009 a number of AP Biology teachers got together and worked hard to establish an award from NABT, sponsored by Pearson, Benjamin Cummings, recognizing Kim’s unprecedented contributions to the AP Biology teaching commu […]
  • World’s Biggest Demo
All right, I confess.  I love cooking shows.  I can’t resist them.  As I enjoy cooking myself, I find it inspiring to watch well trained and creative food gurus work their magic.  How exactly do they hold the knife?  In their estimation, how much is a “handful”?  What pots, pans, and kitchen gadgets do they […]
  • Participatory Media Workshop at #NABT10
On Friday, at the National Assocation of Biology Teachers meeting in Minneapolis, I gave a workshop on Participatory Media. The session was designed to introduce teachers to participatory media tools through the concept of student projects.  That is, what are students in biology courses across the country, doing with these new web 2.0 tools?  In […]
  • A Social Media Experiment at #NABT 2010
For those of you attending the NABT conference in Minneapolis this year, you might have noticed this card (above) in your bag of goodies from the registration booth.  The card urged anyone posting content related to the conference to add the identifying “hashtag” #NABT10 to their postings. A hastag is a short character string, preceded […]
