{"id":2130,"date":"2010-01-07T10:39:09","date_gmt":"2010-01-07T16:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/?p=2130"},"modified":"2010-01-07T10:43:49","modified_gmt":"2010-01-07T16:43:49","slug":"two-new-cafe-scientifique-for-ne-ks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/?p=2130","title":{"rendered":"Two new Cafe Scientifique for NE KS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Over the last couple of years a really neat idea to help popularize science has spread widely across the U.S.&#8212;the Cafe Scientifique.\u00a0 Here, in an informal setting, scientists discuss their work with the general public.\u00a0 Generally, held in restaurants or brew pubs the programs offer a time to socialize, have a good time and learn a little bit about the science that is happening in your community.\u00a0 NE Kansas has two of these starting up this month:<\/p>\n<p>In Lawrence at the venerable Free State Brewery the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhm.ku.edu\/Hdocs\/WhatsNew.html\" target=\"_blank\">KU Museum of Natural History<\/a> is offering Science on Tap&#8211;here&#8217;s their first program:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2131\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/2010\/01\/07\/two-new-cafe-scientifique-for-ne-ks\/science-on-tap\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2131 alignnone\" title=\"science-on-tap\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/science-on-tap-300x265.png\" alt=\"science-on-tap\" width=\"300\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/science-on-tap-300x265.png 300w, https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/science-on-tap.png 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>Kaw Kinetics: Hydroelectric Energy in Lawrence<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">7:30 \u2013 9 p.m. Jan. 26<br \/>\nFree State Brewing Company<br \/>\n636 Massachusetts St.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sarah Hill-Nelson, owner and operator of Bowersock Mills &amp; Power Co., will kick off Science on Tap, a new community science event. Hill-Nelson will introduce the history of hydroelectric power in Lawrence and discuss the pros and cons of harnessing the energy of the Kansas River, now and into the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Science on Tap is a series of informal discussions organized around topics in science and technology. Here\u2019s how it works: Guest speakers introduce a topic for 15-20 minutes. After a short break for food and drink, the crowd is encouraged to interact by asking questions and raising concerns about the topic. Come early for dinner, or join us just for the conversation.
