Body Browser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Vesalius would be Proud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This morning, while browsing through\u00a0science related twitter posts,\u00a0I became aware of Google Lab&#8217;s new Body Browser, at <a href=\"http:\/\/bodybrowser.googlelabs.com\/\">http:\/\/bodybrowser.googlelabs.com\/<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/body-browswer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/body-browswer-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" which\u00a0appears to be\u00a0required for the use of this website, I played around a bit, and took a few screen shots so that you could see what is available.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The format is similar to Google Maps or Google Earth\u00a0with regards to the\u00a0clickable tool\u00a0allowing one to zoom in and out, and to rotate left, right, up, and down.\u00a0 Underneath this tool, is a sliding bar with icons\u00a0for the\u00a0different\u00a0systems of the\u00a0 human body.\u00a0 As one slides the bar vertically through the icons, the human body progressively displays each\u00a0system with the\u00a0current\u00a0system becoming more transparent as you pass into the next.\u00a0 The\u00a0systems are not identified but correspond to the external body, muscular system, skeletal system, internal organs, circulatory system, and nervous system (see the screen shot images that follow).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Body-Layer.jpg\"><img two\u00a0images, you can zoom, turn on labels at the bottom of the sliding bar, and select a particular labeled item of interest.\u00a0 Once selected that item will be highlighted relative to the surrounding tissue.\u00a0 At the moment there\u00a0aren&#8217;t links to information about the particular body parts you select, but I imagine that that will be in a future version.\u00a0\u00a0Click selected<\/p>\n<p>Beside viewing the human body in the manner described above, one can selectively\u00a0adjust the relative transparency of each layer at the same time as well.\u00a0 To select this second option, click on the oval icon having three vertical lines, just above the labels selection.\u00a0 Once completed, this displays a sliding bar for each system.\u00a0 The following image is a blog post, my 1st grade\u00a0son said,\u00a0&#8220;We could see all this better if we cut open a person&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At first, I hestitated\u00a0acknowledging the comment\u00a0wondering if he had been exposed to too much violence on television.\u00a0 But after a pause, he added, &#8220;The person could be dead already.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I asked, &#8220;Where could we\u00a0get a dead person?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He suggested, &#8220;A junk yard.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Having been to a funeral recently, I reminded him that most humans bury their dead, and that\u00a0it would be against the law for one to dig up a grave.<\/p>\n<p>I added though that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andreas_Vesalius\" target=\"_blank\">Andreas Vesalius<\/a> did just that in the 1500&#8217;s!<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0imagine he\u00a0might\u00a0be proud of Google&#8217;s new Body Browser, as well as my son&#8217;s insight.<\/p>\n<p><a
