Local competitions are held throughout North America and the winners are invited to the championship at the University of Maryland during Brain Awareness Week &#8211; March 14 &#8211; 20th, 2011.\u00a0 Sponsored by the <\/em><a href=\" www2.kumc.edu\/sfnkc\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Kansas City Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Local Brain Bee included questions based on <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfn.org\/skins\/main\/pdf\/brainfacts\/2008\/brain_facts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Brain Facts<\/em><\/a><em>: A Primer on the Brain and Nervous, the publication of the Society for Neuroscience.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Apply by February 1 by sending 1) your name, 2) grade, 3) school name, and 4) teachers name to <\/em><a href=\"mailto:sfnkc@kumc.edu\"><em>sfnkc@kumc.edu<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Brain_Bee_Map.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Brain_Bee_Map.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Brain_Bee_Map.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Learn more about the rules&#8230;<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: MyriadPro-Regular;color: #231f20\"><span style=\"font-family: MyriadPro-Regular;color: #231f20\"><strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>We have changed the format a bit this year to make it more fair and more fun for the students involved. \u00a0Here are the new rules for this year&#8217;s Brain Bee:<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<div><strong>The Competition Rules<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Part 1 is broken into 8 rounds of 5 questions each. Questions will be read one at a time by the\u00a0judge and all participants will have 30 seconds to answer the same question. Each answer is\u00a0written on a separate large index card. Spelling does not count. After 30 seconds, the judge will\u00a0read the correct answer. Participants will hold up their index cards for the judge and spotters, and\u00a0incorrect answers will be taken from them. Participants will move to the next round only if they\u00a0answer the predetermined number of questions correctly, for example, 2 out of 5 in round 1.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Participants eliminated from the competition will move to the audience.\u00a0 The goal at the end of 8 rounds is to have 4 finalists. If at the end of 8 rounds more than 4\u00a0participants remain in the competition, the top 4 are determined by the total number of correct <\/em><em>answers from rounds 1-8. In the event of a tie for the fourth finisher, all fourth finishers will\u00a0enter the Final Round. If there are 4 participants remaining in the competition before completing\u00a08 rounds, Final Round questions will begin immediately.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>In the Final Round, participants are eliminated when they accumulate three wrong answers.\u00a0 Questions are asked until the \u201cBest Brain\u201d is determined. The last one standing is the winner. In the event of a tie for second place, further questions will be asked to determine the second and\u00a0third place winners.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Any discrepancy in an answer is decided by the judges who\u00a0have full authority to accept or reject answers.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Prizes:\u00a0 Cash Prizes for first ($300), second ($100), and third ($50) place winners.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The first place winner is eligible to compete in the National Brain Bee at the University of Maryland,\u00a0during Brain Awareness Week 2011, for the chance to win a trip to represent\u00a0the United States at the International Brain Bee Championship.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/webmail.bluevalleyk12.org\/OWA\/redir.aspx?C=5ce5889572b24b4592a3d062b9f595fc&amp;URL=mailto%3asfnkc%40kumc.edu\"><\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Thanks and we look forward to seeing you all,<\/h3>\n<h3>Will Messamore<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday, February 12, 2011, 9 am &#8211; 12 pm University of Kansas Medical Center, Beller Auditorium \u00a0The International Brain Bee (IBB) is a live Q&amp;A competition that tests the neuroscience knowledge of high school students.
