{"id":406,"date":"2008-07-16T17:35:27","date_gmt":"2008-07-16T22:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/?p=406"},"modified":"2008-07-16T17:35:59","modified_gmt":"2008-07-16T22:35:59","slug":"photosynthesis-lab-and-a-cibt-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/?p=406","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;You can see photosynthesis happening.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I had the privilege of presenting the <a title=\"Leaf Disk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/2007\/03\/25\/studying-photosynthesis-with-the-floating-leaf-disk-assay\/\" target=\"_blank\">Floating Leaf Disk Photosynthesis lab<\/a> to a group of enthusiastic <a title=\"CIBT\" href=\"http:\/\/cibt.bio.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cornell Institute for Biology Teaching (CIBT) <\/a>teachers.\u00a0 I really enjoyed my brief time with these folks that gave up 2 weeks of their summer to learn more biology&#8211;specifically labs that work for their students.<\/p>\n<p>One of the participants, Lynn, was very familiar with the lab and had actually submitted it as one of her &#8220;favorite labs&#8221; to share, not knowing that I was going to present.\u00a0 Something she said, really captures this experience and value of this lab.\u00a0 She said that one of her students (one that might not have demonstrated a lot of previous interest in biology) completed an investigation of his own question about photosynthesis and reported on it in a science fair type of format.\u00a0 Apparently he described the floating disk technique to his judges as<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can see photosynthesis happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/rising.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-407\" title=\"rising\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/rising.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/rising.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/rising-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s right and that&#8217;s what makes this technique such a powerful tool for learning about photosynthesis and\u00a0 doing science.\u00a0 Thanks for sharing, Lynn.<\/p>\n<p>BW<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I had the privilege of presenting the Floating Leaf Disk Photosynthesis lab to a group of enthusiastic Cornell Institute for Biology Teaching (CIBT) teachers.\u00a0 I really enjoyed my brief time with these folks that gave up 2 weeks of their summer to learn more biology&#8211;specifically labs that work for their students.
