Camden recently asked for a\u00a0list\u00a0of books that might be good for summer reading assignments. \u00a0I thought others might find this useful as well so here is a copy of my reply:<\/p>\n

One thing you might do is have them check out book reviews on these books (after they have read them—especially the academic reviews)<\/p>\n

Here are some books\/authors:<\/p>\n
<\/div>\n
Nick Lane’s Books:<\/a>\u00a0 Life Ascending; \u00a0Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life; and Oxygen, the Molecule that made the World. \u00a0Great, great connections written by a scientist. \u00a0Connections at all levels.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Neil Shubin’s books:<\/a>\u00a0 Your Inner Fish and The Universe Within: A Scientific Adventure. \u00a0Both are very good and do a great job showing how theory guides investigation. \u00a0Great connections.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Sean Carrol’s Books:<\/a>\u00a0 The Making of the Fittest and Endless forms Most Beautiful would work well. \u00a0He has two others that will promote the idea of being a scientist and adventure.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Carl Zimmers Books<\/a>: \u00a0All are good but I think that\u00a0Microcosm<\/a>\u00a0is the one of the best at connecting all of life. \u00a0Parasite Rex and At the Water’s Edge are great also.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Ignorance: \u00a0How it Drives Science by Stuart Firestein<\/a>\u00a0 Short, valuable read.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
One you might want to check out is\u00a0Life’s Ratchet by Peter M. Hoffman<\/a>–probably too much for students.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Marlene Zuk has great books\u00a0<\/a>as well—better than some of the more popular books promoted by some of the AP BioTeachers on the forum. \u00a0I really think that Riddled with Life should be more widely read.<\/div>\n

Dr. Tatiana’s Sex Advice to All Creation by Olivia Judson will get them going.<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Matt Ridley’s\u00a0<\/a>books are very well done: \u00a0I particularly recommend Nature via Nuture and Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 chapters.<\/div>\n

Jonathan Weiner has two great books<\/a>: \u00a0Beak of the Finch and Time, Love, and Memory.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I am sure I’ve forgotten some and there are some popular books out there that folks like to assign that I’m not so hot on. \u00a0I’ll check my bookshelf at home to see if there some other possibilities. \u00a0One of the issues is that there haven’t been a lot of recent books that fit this model. \u00a0Neil Shubin’s just came out but most are within the last 10 years and still mostly relevant.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
