{"id":4132,"date":"2013-05-10T14:52:02","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T19:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/?p=4132"},"modified":"2013-05-10T14:52:02","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T19:52:02","slug":"recommended-books-for-students-and-biology-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/?p=4132","title":{"rendered":"Recommended Books for Students and Biology Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Camden recently asked for a\u00a0list\u00a0of books that might be good for summer reading assignments. \u00a0I thought others might find this useful as well so here is a copy of my reply:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One thing you might do is have them check out book reviews on these books (after they have read them&#8212;especially the academic reviews)<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Here are some books\/authors:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nick-lane.net\/\">Nick Lane&#8217;s Books:<\/a>\u00a0 Life Ascending; \u00a0Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life; and Oxygen, the Molecule that made the World. \u00a0Great, great connections written by a scientist. \u00a0Connections at all levels.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Neil-Shubin\/e\/B001JRYO2S\">Neil Shubin&#8217;s books:<\/a>\u00a0 Your Inner Fish and The Universe Within: A Scientific Adventure. \u00a0Both are very good and do a great job showing how theory guides investigation. \u00a0Great connections.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/seanbcarroll.com\/\">Sean Carrol&#8217;s Books:<\/a>\u00a0 The Making of the Fittest and Endless forms Most Beautiful would work well. \u00a0He has two others that will promote the idea of being a scientist and adventure.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/carlzimmer.com\/\">Carl Zimmers Books<\/a>: \u00a0All are good but I think that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/carlzimmer.com\/books\/microcosm\/index.html\">Microcosm<\/a>\u00a0is the one of the best at connecting all of life. \u00a0Parasite Rex and At the Water&#8217;s Edge are great also.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ignorance-Drives-Science-Stuart-Firestein\/dp\/0199828075\">Ignorance: \u00a0How it Drives Science by Stuart Firestein<\/a>\u00a0 Short, valuable read.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One you might want to check out is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lifes-Ratchet-Molecular-Machines-Extract\/dp\/0465022537\">Life&#8217;s Ratchet by Peter M.
