Fastplants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since many AP Biology teachers are trying to grow Fastplants for the first time, I thought I&#8217;d do a few blog posts that follow a generation of Fastplants in my lab. \u00a0When I was in the high school classroom I always had a surplus of seed stock available because I was always growing the plants. \u00a0Now, \u00a0I just grow them occassionally because I think it is fun and also to provide starter seed stock for the new biology teachers that graduate from our UKanTeach program. \u00a0Back in July I was fortunate to travel up to the University of Wisconsin for another Fastplant workshop. \u00a0Paul and Hedi had Fastplants growing in a number of different types of containers<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3736\/9523855515_8bd0d76f33_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3736\/9523855515_8bd0d76f33_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>but I was particularly interested in the deli\/discovery cup growing systems because they are very close the the technique I used to use in my classes back when film canisters were available.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2828\/9523855595_d775a94067_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2828\/9523855595_d775a94067_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The water reservoir (the deli container) can be used to also deliver soluble fertilizer so there is minimal care needed. \u00a0These containers are a bit small for weekends so I chose to use 16 oz. containers.<\/p>\n<p>I returned from Wisconsin with some new ideas to try out as well as some seed. \u00a0Note that I brought the seed back stuck in tape. \u00a0We used the tape to pick the seed up and folded it back over itself to seal the seed in after making a couple of folded over tabs on the end.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2826\/9605915261_f447a50956_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2826\/9605915261_f447a50956_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll find a description of this technique in several of the resources on the Fastplant website: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastplants.org\/pdf\/growing_instructions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.fastplants.org\/pdf\/growing_instructions.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the mean time one of my former students asked me about growing Fastplants so I decided to go out and get some more current cost estimates for supplies. \u00a0Assuming you have a light source but otherwise are starting from scratch here is what I found.<\/p>\n<p>Soluble fertilizer from a local garden store: \u00a020-20-20 with micronutrients<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7418\/9609070006_eba1f521ef_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7418\/9609070006_eba1f521ef_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Artificial seed starter mix soil:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5448\/9605910047_ce7930b6c9_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5448\/9605910047_ce7930b6c9_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>or a larger bag:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7348\/9609141910_497595bd5a_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" City:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3759\/9609142436_508ce07e5d_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3759\/9609142436_508ce07e5d_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>along with lids:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5476\/9605911637_5f9b6f630e_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5476\/9605911637_5f9b6f630e_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The portion cups from Party America cost about $3.50 per 100 1.25 oz. cups. \u00a0I already had quite a bit of yellow braided nylon mason twine from Home Depot so I don&#8217;t have a cost for that. \u00a0The neat thing about this system is that the individual cups can be moved about and that module based system is pretty easy to manage in a classroom. \u00a0I also purchased a can of Flat Black Spray Paint (one coat) that I used to paint the deli containers and lids to hopefully reduce algae growth in the water reservoirs.<\/p>\n<p>I marked and cut 1 and 3\/8 inch diameter holes in the lids to hold the cups. \u00a0I purchased a 1 and 3\/8 inch spade bit to do this for about $5. \u00a0The holes are cut very carefully and slowly by running the drill backwards or counterclockwise. \u00a0In that way the bit just kind of scratches its way through the thin plastic of the lid. \u00a0Going in the forward or clockwise direction will likely lead to different levels of disaster&#8212;the bit is not designed to cut into such thin material in the forward direction. \u00a0If you drill that way you&#8217;ll just tear up the lid and likely not produce any holes that will work.<\/p>\n<p>Marking the hole locations with a paper template.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3766\/9609144696_c3732fa8e4_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3766\/9609144696_c3732fa8e4_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Carefully drilling in reverse to cut the holes:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5482\/9605914093_66e2675c85_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5482\/9605914093_66e2675c85_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I added 250 ml of dilute fertilizer solution to each deli system. \u00a0I mixed the 1 measure (a full bottle cap from a 20 oz. soda bottle) fertilizer in 1 liter of water and then diluted that stock solution 1 part stock solution to 7 parts water. \u00a0 I also drilled 1\/8 inch holes in the bottom of the 1.25 oz. portion cups, added a 6 inch length of twine to serve as a wick, added moist soil mix to the cups to get ready to plant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7388\/9605914659_3910f312d2_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7388\/9605914659_3910f312d2_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can see the bluish fertilizer in the systems to the left and the wicks extending out of the cups on the right. \u00a0I moisten the soil so that I can work with it in a gallon plastic bag by squeezing water into it. \u00a0You can see the bag at the top of the tray. \u00a0Before I place a cup of soil into one of the systems I first make sure that the wicking system is working. \u00a0To do that I gently poured water from the pitcher in one of the cups until water was dripping from the wick. \u00a0This ensures that the soil is moist as well. \u00a0Once the water was dripping from the wick I transferred the cup to one of the growing systems.<\/p>\n<p>I then planted 4-6 seeds in each cup (I will trim this back to only two plants in each cup in about a week). \u00a0The seeds were simply dropped onto the surface of the moist soil. \u00a0They are not &#8220;planted&#8221; beneath the surface.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3739\/9609147012_692d1b2da9_h.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3739\/9609147012_692d1b2da9_h.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At this point I added a little bit of horticultural vermiculite to the surface of each cup. \u00a0I got this tip from Paul W. \u00a0 You could sprinkle a little bit of soil at this point but vermiculite helps the germinating plant to escape its seed coat. \u00a0I did not include the vermiculite in the costs above but I imagine it is around $8 for a small bag that will last for years of classroom plantings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3665\/9605916427_1965d950fc_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3665\/9605916427_1965d950fc_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The systems then went under the lights. \u00a0Notice how close I have positioned the lights for now.<\/p>\n<p>Day 0.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7306\/9609148020_7d78f2ed53_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7306\/9609148020_7d78f2ed53_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Day 1: \u00a0No apparent change:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7369\/9605917131_61165062a5_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7369\/9605917131_61165062a5_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Day 2: \u00a0We have germination<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2832\/9609150296_03883e89f9_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2832\/9609150296_03883e89f9_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Day 3: \u00a0Most of the plants have germinated. \u00a0The cotyledons are expanding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7322\/9606679317_b496eaa531_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7322\/9606679317_b496eaa531_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2857\/9606679235_e62fe9b40d_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"
