{"id":4269,"date":"2013-08-31T15:15:12","date_gmt":"2013-08-31T20:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/?p=4269"},"modified":"2013-08-31T15:15:12","modified_gmt":"2013-08-31T20:15:12","slug":"day-7-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/?p=4269","title":{"rendered":"Day 7 update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you recall, I planted this group of fastplants last Sat. \u00a0(That was day 0). \u00a0Today is day seven. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a poor photo from Day 5<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7342\/9640070078_9c461dbfd3_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7342\/9640070078_9c461dbfd3_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note that in some cups there are way more than the two plan to raise per cup and some cups have none. \u00a0I have only a few ideas why the cups with no plants turned out that way. \u00a0I did check out the fertilizer\/water levels on Thurs. and decided to top off the reservoirs with fresh fertilizer solution even though they didn&#8217;t need it quite yet. \u00a0I added enough of the fertilizer mix to bring the solution up to almost the bottom of the planting cups. \u00a0The planting systems went from Sat. to Thurs. with essentially no care&#8211;for the first week. \u00a0This will not possible going forward now that the plants are growing. \u00a0Next weekend they will be big enough that the plants will drain the reservoirs every 2-3 days. \u00a0I&#8217;ll need to be vigilant.<\/p>\n<p>On day six, I decided to thin the plants. \u00a0Thinning the plants simply meant cutting off select plants in each cup until only two remained. \u00a0I did do something I usually don&#8217;t do with my students&#8211;I transplanted some of the excess from one cup to cups without any sprouted plants. \u00a0Normally, this is beyond the skills of most students (and beyond mine as well). \u00a0I just thought I&#8217;d experiment a bit. \u00a0Sometimes when I am fishing, I forget to take photos of my experience. \u00a0 Yesterday, I was concentrating so much on the thinning process and transplanting that I simply forgot to take an progress photos.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the plants look like on day 7.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7330\/9636831385_e02d2bdc1c_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7330\/9636831385_e02d2bdc1c_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Looks like they have survived the thinning\/transplanting process just fine. \u00a0Note that most are now straight up. \u00a0I rotated the planting systems, yesterday as well. \u00a0Check out how hairy some of these plants are. \u00a0Maybe I&#8217;ll do a selection for hairy but the best time for that would be tomorrow or Monday (day 8 or 9) \u00a0I don&#8217;t think I will be available to do all the counting necessary. \u00a0We will see.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3753\/9640069172_f7ac62086a_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3753\/9640069172_f7ac62086a_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More plants with quite a few hairs. \u00a0You should also note that most of the plants have at least on of the true leaves now and several plants have more that one. \u00a0You can also see in this image one of the plants I thinned yesterday along with some of the cut stems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2870\/9640064270_919db2b334_b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2870\/9640064270_919db2b334_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now here is a common problem. \u00a0Take a close look at the plant in the foreground&#8211;the one with the large cotyledons. \u00a0What do you notice?
