It introduces the real life struggles of a courageous high school student who has Sickle Cell Anemia. Having a narrative that the kids can cling to really helps to engage them in the value of learning about this topic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bEYqP8iZ8TE\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bEYqP8iZ8TE<\/a> \\<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I introduced the driving questions or problem that we will be looking at.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#1 How does the gene for sickle cell anemia cause such dramatic changes in people\u2019s health?<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#2 Why has the disease sickle cell anemia become such a widespread problem in certain regions of the world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcSYbsw9Y-GCcq1m7-sM7irJZGqoPJtcpj211werFJ1SAJNKeBVc\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I showed the students an image of where the incidence of SCA is in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0287-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6220\" width=\"386\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0287-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0287-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0287-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0287-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.kabt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0287.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><figcaption>This is a pause about 20 min. into a 45 minute lesson to get students moving and assess whether they have learned anything and are willing to learn. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I collected these and read them to the class in four minutes. Higher levels of understanding can only come with fundamental vocabulary and clarity.  This diagram is simple for my introductory biology course. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of class I made students diagram the process of protein synthesis.
